CornCAP®

A valuable addition to your Helicoverpa IPM program in corn

CornCAP® capsules contain parasitic wasp pupae (Trichogramma pretiosum) for the suppression of pest caterpillars (e.g. Helicoverpa armigera & Spodoptera frugiperda) in corn.

Mode of Action: Adult Trichogramma emerge from capsules and search for pest eggs. Females lay their eggs inside host eggs, where developing larvae consume the contents and prevent pest emergence. New adult wasps then emerge, mate and parasitise additional pest eggs, providing ongoing suppression

Application Timing:

  • Early, inoculative releases are key to CornCAP® effectiveness. Release at the first signs of pest activity from the 6-leaf stage onwards, when eggs are present.
  • Release with sufficient time for Trichogramma to complete at least 2-3 generations before silking. At 25-28°C, Trichogramma completes a generation in approximately 8-10 days.
  • Multiple releases are recommended due to the limited dispersal range of Trichogramma (±20 m per generation) and the extended egg-laying period of target pests over several weeks.

Enhancing IPM with CornCAP®:

  • CornCAP® alone rarely provides complete control of Helicoverpa and fall armyworm (FAW), but it is an effective suppression tool to minimise damage and reduce the risk of infection by aflatoxin-producing fungi.
  • It is compatible with other biocontrol products (e.g. NPV), and a selective larvicide may be necessary for additional control at silking depending on pest pressure.
